Prevention. Right up my street! I read this a couple of years ago and it’s been our approach ever since.
And it works. I used to get them really badly; sometimes three in a row… Sinus infections. Chest infections. Almost guaranteed.
Until I learnt a few tricks to help stop them in their tracks.
Viruses multiply incredibly rapidly so the most important thing we do is to act fast – at the first sneeze or tickly throat. And I’m prepared at work, at home or when travelling…
So here’s what we do…
- Echinacea and goldenseal three times a day until the coldly feeling passes. I can buy them separately or combined, which is equally good.
Echinacea boosts the immune system to fight viruses and Goldenseal protects the mucous membranes, such as in the sinuses and lungs. I wouldn’t take Echinacea daily for more than 3 weeks at a time as it loses its effectiveness.
Please note: As ever, check with a healthcare professional before starting to use. Herbal remedies can interact with how medications are processed by the body.
- Vitamin C as magnesium ascorbate twice day, not at the same time as any form of sugar.
Vitamin C is taken up by white blood cells using insulin receptors, but they will favour glucose over the vitamin C. I also wouldn’t take any effervescent vitamin C, which is likely to contain aspartame.
Please note: There are various forms of vitamin C, some of which can be really harsh on the stomach. I would only go for magnesium ascorbate.
- Where possible, cook with lots of garlic.
Garlic contains compounds that help the immune system fight germs.
- If my throat is a bit sore I will drink a teaspoon of 525+ MGO manuka honey in warm water.
Manuka honey has antibacterial properties, as well as antiviral, anti inflammatory and antioxidant effects. This is great for staving off a cold. But I would avoid adding it to boiling water.
And last but not least, we use a couple of our favourite essential oils:
- Thieves® essential oil blend. I’ll rub it on my feet.
Thieves® was created by Young Living based on research about four thieves in France who protected themselves with cloves, rosemary, and other aromatics while robbing plague victims. This proprietary blend was university tested and found to be highly effective in supporting the immune system and good health. And I love the smell!
Please note: Thieves® is classed as a ‘hot’ oil so needs diluting 1 drop with 4 drops of carrier oil. Always do a skin test first before using.
- Raven™ essential oil blend on a tissue to inhale or in a diffuser for 15 minutes.
Raven™ was created by Young Living and is a combination of Ravensara, lemon, wintergreen, peppermint and Eucalyptus radiata, which are deeply soothing essential oils. I love the smell of this one too!
So that’s what we do. As well as plenty of sleep and staying warm.
And a bonus tip; cold viruses can lay dormant in the sinuses then be activated when breathing in cold air so take extra care when it’s frosty outside!
