We have handed over our health in exchange for convenience. And the frightening thing is that we don’t even know it.
For 50 years I ate just like anyone else; breakfast cereal and toast, cake, biscuits or crisps for snacks, sandwiches or soup for lunch and would open the freezer door to select from southern fried chicken pieces, pizza, curry and onion bhajis or breaded fish with oven chips for dinner. Quick and simple. And didn’t take much thought when shopping either. And when they were on deals – even better!
Then a couple of years ago I watched a programme, which explained about various food additives used as flavour enhancers and the damage they can do to our bodies and especially our brains. So without further ado, I started looking at ingredient labels. And I was genuinely shocked.
Did you know that there are several different names for flavour enhancers, which can cause neurological damage? And that manufacturers have started to use alternative names for sweeteners so that they can be dispersed through the ingredients list? That’s aside from all the preservatives, stabilisers, emulsifiers…
For example, disodium phosphate is used as a stabiliser, thickener and preservative – but also as a flame retardant! And we eat that!
And it’s not just an issue of isolated chemical ingredients. What happens when we eat a cocktail of them? And do they accumulate in our bodies over time?
And how did we reach a situation where we’ve become so dependent on processed food anyway? Or where we believe that children will only eat ‘children’ food.
As to the effects on our bodies, it’s no wonder we’re becoming sicker. Not only is highly processed food nutritionally deficient, but the added chemicals can upset our microbiome, cause inflammation of our digestive system as well as neurological damage, as I mentioned earlier, and are toxins that our bodies have to work hard to get rid of. In addition to that, artificial sweeteners can increase the risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease and they alter how our bodies function.
Altogether, not great.
If we want to take back our health we must start reading labels. And ultimately it would be best to swap foods with labels for real food – full stop.
We’ve now done this and our taste buds have changed so much; processed food now tastes really salty and sweet and we genuinely don’t like it anymore. And some of it is just ‘plastic’!
